In response to the recent surge of violence perpetrated by bandits in the Ussa and Takum Local Government Areas of Taraba State, the House of Representatives has passed a resolution urging immediate action from government and security agencies.
The resolution, which was sponsored by Hon. Rimamnde Shawulu Kwewum, mandates the Chief of Defence Staff to deploy Special Forces to Ussa Local Government Area, while also requiring the Inspector General of Police, Alkali Baba, to deploy a Mobile Police Force to the sections of Takum Bisaula Road where bandits frequently attack and kill innocent road users.
Hon. Shawulu, in his lead debate, highlighted the recent attacks that have taken place on an almost daily basis over the past week, with bandits setting up camp along Takum-Bisaula road and ambushing and macheting 10 people to death.
He further noted that several electoral wards, such as Fikyu and Kpambo Puri in Ussa Local Government Areas, have also come under attack with heavy casualties, particularly among women and children.
According to Hon. Shawulu, the lack of military and police presence in the Ussa Local Government Area has made it difficult to respond to these attacks, resulting in the closure of schools for almost a year.
Additionally, farming activities have been disrupted in the area for the past year, with over 60 communities destroyed and more than 400 people killed, including women and children.
The House expressed concern that the activities of these bandits during the rainy season would further jeopardize agricultural activities, as Ussa and Takum are among the largest food-providing Local Government Areas of Taraba State.
Furthermore, the state government has been unable to control or draw the attention of the Federal authorities to the seriousness of the situation.
As a result, the House has mandated the authorities of NEMA, North East Development Commission, and the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development to provide relief materials, especially roofing sheets, for these communities as the rainy season has set in and many people are without roofs over their heads.
